The
Philadelphia Athletics Historical Society. The
Philadelphia Athletics played American League baseball from 1901 to
1954 and produced a number of hall of famers. A new owner
moved the team to Kansas City, MO, in 1955 where it stayed until 1967.
Yet another owner moved the team to Oakland for the 1968
season. The Oakland Athletics remain in Oakland to this day.
The Philadelphia Athletics Historical Society was set up in
to foster appreciation of the Philadelphia Athletics, its officials,
players, ball parks and its part in Philadelphia baseball history.
Hatboro has a significant place
in American Revolutionary War history.
George Washington and his officers ate dinner at the Crooked
Billet Tavern in Hatboro in 1777. Also, the Battle of Crooked
Billet was fought there on May 1, 1778.

History:
|
In the early 1700’s, John
Dawson, an English hatter,
settled the area that is now Hatboro and built his home there. He
operated a hat factory out of his home. He made hats from the
furs of rabbit
and beaver that were abundant in the area. The factory became
a well known hat producer,
giving the town its name. His home also became a well known tavern
called the Crooked Bullet Inn. The village that formed around his
tavern was given the name of The Billet, and formally named Hatboro in
1740. The tavern would become a resting stop for American Revolutionary
War soldiers and the Battle of Crooked Billet was fought near there.
Other notables and ordinary citizens ate and drank there during those
years. Unfortunately, the building was torn down in 1954 and replaced
by newer structures.
The Union Library was founded in
1755 and is still in
operation today. The building where it operates today was built in
1850. It is the second oldest library in Pennsylvania to be operating
under its original charter.
Hatboro was officially
incorporated as a borough in 1871.
The first bank was opened in 1873 and the railroad came to town in 1874.
World War II brought a few more
people to town with
nearby Brewster Aviation in Warminster and Willow Grove Naval Air
Station in Horsham.
This century has brought the revitalization
of the
Borough of Hatboro.
