History:
|
Doylestown started as a tavern
that was established in
1745 by William Doyle on what is now the northwest corner of Main and
State Street. It became known as “William Doyle’s Tavern” and was
located strategically in a largely agricultural area at an intersection
of roads linking Philadelphia and other towns in the southeast corner
of the state. This hamlet grew in to what became the village of
Doylestown. It became a central village in the county and was
designated as the county seat in 1813. The Borough of Doylestown was
incorporated in 1838.
In 1857, the North Pennsylvania
railroad came to town.
Due to elevation and lack of strong water power, there was not much in
the way of industrial development. Doylestown grew to become
professional and residential in nature and the automobile and improved
roads and highways eventually came to town.
In the early 20th century,
Doylestown became known for
the “Tools of the Nation-Maker” museum constructed by Henry Chapman
Mercer. He wanted the museum to contain relics of American history and
also world history. In his museum, he wanted to preserve the everyday
life of the average American in the 18th and 19th centuries.
In the late 20th century,
Doylestown saw a renaissance of its downtown and greater appreciation
for its architectural heritage.
