History:

Salem, New Hampshire, was originally part of Methuen, Massachusetts. Methuen was first settled in 1642 and incorporated in 1726. From about 1736 to 1741, the area of Salem was known as the “North Parish” of Methuen and also the “Methuen District”. In 1741, the boundary between Massachusetts and New Hampshire was redrawn, making the “North Parish” part of New Hampshire. It was named after the nearby town of Salem, Massachusetts. Benning Wentworth, the first Royal Governor of New Hampshire incorporated the town in 1750.

In 1902, Canobie Lake Park was established in Salem by the Massachusetts Northeast Street Railway Company to encourage leisure trolley excursions. It was a great success and the park became one of the leading resorts of its kind in New England, with rides, arcades, a dance hall and other entertainment. With the rise of the automobile came the decline of the trolley. However, the park continues to be popular today.

In 1906, Rockingham Park Race Track opened, making it the first horse race track in New England.

Starting in the 1950’s, residential and commercial development came to Salem as part of the greater Boston area.
