|
History:
|
Hinsdale was chartered in 1753
by Benning Wentworh, who was the first New Hampshire Colonial
Governor.
The town was named after Colonel
Ebenezer Hinsdale (or Hinsdell). He
graduated from Harvard College and ordained to be become a missionary
to the Native Americans. He was then stationed at Fort Drummer as a
chaplain. He had some property in what is now Hinsdale and in 1743, he
built Fort Hinsdale and a grist mill (also known as a corn mill) at his
own cost. He built a house there about 1759. It was the first frame
building in that town. He also established a large mercantile business
in town. The town had an early history of Native American assaults,
raids and captivities.
Hinsdale has been a farming
community. Also, during the 19th and 20th centuries, Hinsdale was home
to numerous paper mills and other industries. The small town of
Hinsdale is still industrious today.
